How to find a psychotherapist?

Congratulations on deciding to start therapy.

I’m sure it wasn’t an easy task. I’m also certain that you might still not be sold on the idea of therapy. But now what? How do you go ahead and start therapy?

Here are some ways how to find a psychotherapist for yourself or your loved one.

1. Ask for referrals:

If you are based in India or another Asian country, asking your family members may not be the best idea though. However, you can post a message in your friends group and ask them to forward that message till you get some leads. Word of mouth has high benefits- you get to know the fees and also the therapy process. You can ask your physician too. They might have a few therapists that they can recommend.

2. Use a search engine:

There are many online therapy platforms, even more have popped up in the pandemic. You can search the phrases ‘psychotherapist/psychologist near me’ or ‘online therapy <add location>’ etc. These will give you enough results to start with.

3. Social media:

Many psychologists are on social media creating awareness and marketing their practice. You can follow certain hashtags such as #psychotherapist #psychologist #therapy #counselling #mentalhealth so that you get posts on your feed which will lead you to accounts of psychologists.

4. Lists of mental health professionals:

There are a few lists curated by not-for-profit organisations such as MHI Queer friendly practitioners, Mindclan and Vaarta. There is a crowdsourced list created by iCall (a service run by TISS). You can search for therapists according to geographical location, budget, expertise, reviews.

You can also check out the ‘About Me’ section on this website to know more about my practice. Feel free to use the inquiry form on the ‘Book a Session’ page to get in touch with me.
